Lifestyle | Three Ways to Improve Your Sleep

Having an adorable puppy has really effected my sleep, I'm exhausted all the time and have noticed it has done more to my body than just make me feel ‘tired’. A constant lack of sleep can cause serious health conditions. With that in mind I thought I would share some some helpful tips to make sure you get enough sleep each night.

No Screens Before Bed

One of the easiest ways to help yourself fall asleep is to stop using your phone or tablet before bed. This is because the light from the screen suppresses the production of melatonin which is the hormone that makes you feel sleepy in the first place. If you often find that when it comes to turn in for the night you don’t feel like sleeping, then cut out the screen usage before bed. If you want to wind down in preparation for going to sleep, though, you do something like play a board game, read a book or listen to a podcast. Whatever you choose to do, just don’t use your phone before bed. Hard, I know.

Get a New Bed/Mattress

You spend an enormous amount of your life asleep, you should do it in comfort. If you have an uncomfortable or noisy bed then it will result in many bad nights of sleep. This will mean you constantly have broken sleep and can lead to sleep deprivation. You can get cheap beds and mattresses from places like Bedstar. They also provide next day delivery, you won’t be without a bed at all. It is important to get the type of bed that is best for you and your current living arrangements. Take your time and make sure it the one you really want. Once you have your new bed though it might surprise you how much better you sleep.

Sleep Pattern

Something as simple as going to bed at the same time each night can help to get more sleep overall. If you frequently have trouble falling asleep and have tried all of the above then it could be because you don’t have a stable sleeping pattern. Brushing your teeth and getting into your PJs at the same time each night, for example, will train your body into knowing it is soon time for sleep. You could also start to associate going to sleep with listening to a podcast or reading your book for half an hour. All of this will help you to develop a sleeping pattern and it will be even more effective if you do the exact same things each night at the same time.

Obviously it is fine to have some nights when you don’t follow this but generally, if you keep to a pattern you will find you fall asleep better and have a more restful night.

What are your best sleeping tips?
