LIFESTYLE | The wedding guest dress code dilemma

Navigating wedding dress codes is a massive nightmare. Is it
a formal affair or something more casual, indoor or out – all these things
matter. We all know the ‘no white rule’ and aren’t likely to show up in tracksuit
bottoms. I think it also depends on the bride and groom, at our wedding one of
our ushers wore trainers with his suit – we were fine with this – that’s just
the type of person he is, but a lot of people have commented at it ‘ruining the
wedding photos’. Let’s be honest, this was the happiest day of my life and was
about the love that Hubs and I have for each other – how important are shoes to
our eternal love? But, some women have been dreaming of their perfect wedding
since they were a little girl playing dress up and for them every detail is
important in making their day special.

My wedding was outdoors in Spain, so we were happy for our
guests to wear summer dresses and more relaxed suits so that they did not melt
during the ceremony. People wore linen suits, maxi dresses, little cocktail
dresses, smart jeans and shirts. I think generally outdoor weddings, especially
those that are in the country barn or a field lend themselves to a more casual
dress code to add to the comfort element.

Next weekend I am attending a childhood friends’ wedding,
this will be a very formal affair – imagine an O.C. or Revenge wedding, held in
a beautiful stately home, probably with 7 or 8 courses (all of which will be
completely divine!). I’m really excited to attend, but formal wear is just
really not my thing – I feel like an imposter. I’m not 100% happy with my
figure, so I’m limited in the types of dresses that I go for. There are a lot
of backless, strapless stunning dresses, that will do nothing to help support my
chest, or they are cut to flatter a lovely slim frame – I know that an empire
cut dress flatters my figure, hiding my stomach and I know I need something
with sleeves to hide the tops of my arms.

Although high-street stores are stocking more and more evening gowns UK
shops are not necessarily catering for all shape and sizes, or indeed bank
balances. When looking for my wedding and bridesmaid dresses I found a wealth
of styles on various online stores and even bought two dresses, beautifully
made to measure for my bridesmaids at a fraction of the cost of any of the
offerings we had in store. My sisters fitted into those dresses perfectly and
looked stunning and the quality was phenomenal. They didn’t actually wear them
in the end because we hadn’t thought properly about the heat and how heavy the
dresses were! One of these websites is MsDressy.
Below is a selection of the beautiful gowns they make.

Let’s hope I find something in time for this weekend – I’ll
keep you posted!
