5 Ways to add a personal touch to your home

Personal touchIf you’re anything like me, you love to look at home decor. Whether it’s following interior designers on Instagram, or watching Grand Designs, I love getting inspiration. But, if we all like the same trends and look to the same things, then we’ll end up with generic look. Remember, it’s the attention to detail and small flourishes that will set your home apart.

Customise your own cushions

Once you’ve thought about the colour scheme in a room, decide what your accent colour, or palette is. Then consider customising your own cushions with a company like Countryside Art. Whether you use family photos, edited with a pop art filter, or create your own pattern, you know that they will be unique. Then you can pair your custom cushions with complimentary ones from the high street. Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures to add more of a personal touch.

Use stencils or stamps instead of Wallpaper

Why risk having the same wallpaper as everyone else? The last house I rented, had the same wallpaper as at least 5 people I know, luckily we all had different colours. But if you have the time, skill and patience (things that I lack!) then why not use stencils or stamps to create a unique design? People pay £100s for hand printed wallpaper, just skip the middle man.

Up-cycle old furniture

This is a no brainer. If you update your old furniture, then it’ll be unique. You can re-upholster a chair, distress a cabinet, or completely change an items purposes. There are so many guide online that are really helpful, and often these transformations aren’t as difficult as they look.

If you’re still hesitant to pick up a paint brush, then there is usually someone who offers the service, just pick your item and your finish.

Make a picture wall

Picture walls have become a big trend the last few years. Before we may have hung one or two pictures, of similar sizes in a uniform fashion. Now days, people create a whole wall of strategically placed pictures, of various sizes to create a desired effect.

You can frame your pictures, or use a frame to share loads of pictures pegged to a string. You can also mix pictures, quotes, print and drawings together, or incorporate your accent colour into the images you curate.

Don’t be afraid to do ‘you’

The most important part of decorating your home, is to make sure you decorate for your needs. I love the idea of a clean looking minimalist space, but I know that in reality, that is not me. I can barely guarantee that I will make the bed in the morning, let alone put everything in its place after using it. To combat this, I have added as much storage to my home as possible. I hide my organised chaos in storage bins neatly arranges on shelves, and buy storage rich furniture, like and ottoman bed.

So, no matter the space, or your taste, each of these handy tips can be used to make your home more ‘you’. Just like with fashion, real style is the personal touch you bring, so don’t be afraid to step away from trends. Think about how the decor will work with your lifestyle, and will it still work for you in a years time.
